The Saphire Program: Jakarta, Indonesia

Frequent flyers in Indonesia have got it sweet with the introduction of a new iris-identification system being introduced at Soekarno-Hatta International Airport in Jakarta.

Automated border passage solution for Indonesia

A new airport service program called Saphire has been officially opened at Jakarta Soekarno-Hatta International Airport. The program was developed by PT Angkasa Pura Schiphol, a fifty-fifty joint venture company of PT (Persero) Angkasa Pura II and Schiphol Group, in collaboration with the Directorate General of Immigration of the Republic of Indonesia.

The Saphire Public Private Partnership will be implemented at major Indonesian airports, starting with Jakarta Soekarno-Hatta International Airport.

Saphire entitles frequent travelers to fast, secured and privileged airport services to enhance their travel convenience. Facilities include front row parking, preferred check-in, dedicated fast track security checks and automated border passage using iris recognition technology.

During automated border passage the passenger’s iris geometry is compared with the iris information registered on the chip of the personalized EIS.I card (Electronic Information System for Immigration).

The system simultaneously checks the passenger against local checklists, making this an extremely secure means of border passage. The EIS.I smart card also contains ICAO compliant face and fingerprint information for fall back manual immigration officer checks as well as for interoperability purposes with other Asian countries.

Dartagnan – a full subsidiary of Schiphol Group – was contracted to design and deliver all Saphire systems and solutions.
