Weaving in Klaten: Yogyakarta, Central Java

Pedan is a small village in Klaten regency, Central Java, about an hour’s drive southwest of Surakarta. The village is famous for its woven fabric produced to different levels of quality and to a variety of designs. A strong earthquake that hit the area early last year forced several weaving houses to close down. Only a few survived the disaster.

Pak Rachmad is among those who were able to continue operating their business.

Employing seniors in the manual weaving process, Rachmad’s business has strengthened. These days, his employees can produce about 9,000 meters of fabric every month.

The product is exported to Australia, the UK, France, Italy, Japan and the United States.

That is not surprising because Rachmad has always focused on quality. He believes that only by doing so will his products continue to attract consumers.
