Secret Passage in Marlborough Fortress: Bengkulu, Sumatra

A 17th century fortress could well hold a secret that promises to boost tourist numbers. Rumours of a mysterious passageway promises to boost tourism in the Indonesian province of Bengkulu. Its historic Marlborough Fort is believed to be linked by an underground tunnel to three strategic places – the governor’s residence, the popular Tapak Paderi beach, and the local branch of the Bank of Indonesia.

The fortress, now the most famous tourist spot in Bengkulu, is a legacy of British occupation of an area once called Bencoolen.

To make it even more attractive to visitors, the authorities have launched an excavation to verify the existence of a hidden passage.

If it does exist, a currently lost chapter in Indonesian history will finally see the light of day, after centuries in the dark.
