Palm Oil Production and the Environment

The farming of Palm Oil is a contentious subject in Indonesia and one that has every environmental group tearing its hair out to have some legislation passed to halt the destruction of rainforests. It is fact that Palm Oil production has been associated with destruction of tropical rainforests and other consequences for the environment. Currently palm oil is the flavour of the month and the worlds most produced vegetable oil. Oil palm fruit yield more oil per hectare than any other commercial crop. The debates will continue, unfortunately, for a long time to come, and, in the meantime precious resources and endangered animals such as orangutans will finally be extinct.
