Today in Bali it is the Mekiyis or Melis Ceremony. This is a purification ceremony held to welcome in ‘Nyepi’, the Day of Silence. It is a long procession of Hindu adherents carrying temple effigies and other sacred symbols down to the beach or sacred springs where the purification ceremonies are held.
