Garebeg Maulud: Yogyakarta, Central Java

Today in Yogyakarta is Garebeg Maulud. Garebeg Maulud is held as a commemoration of the birth of Muhammad the Prophet. The night before the ceremony, the Sultan and the royal family attend biography readings of Muhammad the Prophet at the Grand Mosque.

Then the Sultan gives his charity called Udhik-udhik to the people. After being blessed, people hardily scramble to get parts of the udhik-udhik. The Garebeg ceremony is also held at Puro Pakualaman at the palace at Jalan Sultan Agung in Yogyakarta.
