Ferries Unsafe: Kupang, East Nusa Tenggara
The East Nusa Tenggara provincial administration issued a travel warning Saturday, advising the public not to use sea transportation over the next week due to high waves in the province’s waters and other parts in Indonesia.
Administration spokesman Eduard Gana said that the travel warning was issued following a similar reminder from the Meteorology and Geophysics Agency about the possibility of high waves reaching 2.5 and 5 meters according to the article in the Jakarta Post.
According to the agency, high waves are likely to occur off Timor, Sawu, Flores and Rote islands, Eduard said.
Albert Kusbagio, head of the agency’s El Tari station in Kupang, said that at present the weather in East Nusa Tenggara remained calm, with waves reaching 1 and 2.5 meters.
“But it can suddenly change as high waves reaching more than 5 meters take place in Sumatra, Java and Bali,” Albert said, saying that the high waves would move eastward.
