Dompu Indonesian Open: Lakey Peak, Sumbawa
In line with their commitment to the growth and development of surfing in Indonesia, Quiksilver has confirmed support as presenting sponsor for the Dompu Indonesian Open presented by Quiksilver lifting the events rating to six star prime and positioning it as the richest Indonesian Surfing Championship (ISC) tour event ever. A fitting return to the famed Lakey Peak in east Sumbawa.
With it’s proximity to Bali and well developed tourist infrastructure, Sumbawa has become a prime surf destination in Indonesia attracting hundreds of surfers each week to sample the legendary waves of Lakey Peak and Lakey Pipe. Understanding the potential of this valuable natural resource the Dompu Regency Government has brought back professional surfing as a vehicle to promote the area to a wider audience.
“We feel that the sport of surfing has the potential to open up more windows for the region of Dompu” Said Mr. Abdul Harris, head of the Dompu Tourism Board. “This event will no doubt generate both excitement and awareness into the area promoting what a recreational and pleasurable destination this is. To also have the support of Quiksilver with the Dompu Indonesian Open creates huge potential through the awareness it will bring to our market place.”
With double ratings points on offer and the IDR 60,000,000 prize purse, makes this highly anticipated event the richest ever in ISC (Indonesian Surfing Championship) Tour history. The 6 Star Prime event will also be the only leg of the tour surfed outside of Bali for the 2007 competitive season.
“Quiksilver has a history of supporting events throughout Indonesia and we are happy to be aligning with the Dompu Regency to help highlight the amazing waves that they have on offer.
With our vast experience in holding world class surf events and Quiksilver’s resources in online, global and local PR we aim to bring greater exposure to this event and the region. We are also rapt to be able to provide the surfers another quality event for this year’s Indonesian Open Series” said Quiksilver Indonesia CEO Greg Hinchliffe.
The last major professional surf competition held at Lakey Peak was held 10 years ago and while attended by a strong field of international and local surfers, the event was won by Indonesian Surf star Rizal Tanjung, who will return to defend his title.
“I always love going to Lakey Peak” said Rizal after he was asked about the event, “it’s such a heavy wave when it’s over 6 feet; much heavier than Padang Padang, and when it’s small its one of the most rippable waves in Indonesia. I’m really excited that the government has taken notice of surfing here in our country and become more involved in the sport. It should be a great event.”
The Dompu Indonesia Open presented by Quiksilver will run from the 13th to 15th of August at Lakey Peak in the Dompu Regency, on the island of Sumbawa. The event is proudly supported by the Dompu Regency Department of Art and Culture, Quiksilver, ISC, Surftime magazine, and Magic Wave magazine.
