Buddha Statue to be Unveiled: Medan, Suamtra
According to a small article in the Jakarta Post, dozens of monks are scheduled to attend a ceremony to unveil the country’s biggest Buddha statue on Jan. 20 in Medan, North Sumatra.
The event’s organizing committee chairman, Eddy Kusuma, said the statue, at 20 meters in height and 110 tons in weight, will be both the tallest and largest in the country.
He said the figure was specially ordered from China.
“Currently, the statue has arrived at the North Sumatra Buddhist Center. We’ll officially unveil it with 100 monks coming from various countries,” Eddy said.
The statue is titled Mandala Buddha Maha Karuna. North Sumatra boasts several religious tourist objects, including the Salib Kasih crucifix in Tarutung regency.
